Lets Try an Estonian Lace Stitch!

Cassandra Harada

in "Hoka Hoka" I use a stitch I like to call "star 3".  It creates an amazing fish scale pattern if you offset the stitches by one every other row.  If you are having a hard time figuring it out, or just have never done it before, let me give you a tutorial!

This pattern is great for lace projects, or a really warm garmet, as it creates little tufts of wool side by side and keeps the wind from getting through!

Here we go!

One particular note:  Try to make your stitches big (when you are knitting through 3 at once.  You will be happy you did in the end, and it makes for much smoother and happier knitting.  Also, if you want the fish scale look, after your row of purl, you should offset the pattern by one or two stitches.  For example, in Hoka Hoka in the third row of the pocket pattern I have you knit 1, 3-to-3 star until then end, and then knit 2.  This creates a diagonal or fish scale pattern.

Good luck with this one!
