Fiber Republic News and what is Coming up on the Wheel!

Estonian Lace...out of my own hand spun and hand dyed Alpaca top. I like this yarn so far, and am going to finish the edges of the shawl in a solid matched to the darkest shade of green....I hope.
This particular shawl is from the pattern "Laminaria" from knitty.com.

Today on the wheel:
I decided against dyeing the Alpaca pink and picked up a few hundred grams of some lovely Merino Top I had laying around...I dyed the roving rather than waiting for the yarn to finish so I didn't have to look at snow white yarn for a few days until I was finished with the spinning.

I started with three lovely shades of pink (a bit girly for me, but I will survive) and have been blending the roving with a set of wool carders...after which I have been creating the softest rollags I have ever had my little fingers on!
The spinning bit is going really fast, but I always misjudge and make fewer rollags than I need, so I have to stop every now and again to make more. It's not a big deal because I love the processes.... Maybe even more than I love the finished product. it's a lot like I remember printmaking was: process... process.... process.... process....process, a little more process...finished product. The great thing about wool is your hands don't get all covered in nasty black ink, and you don't damage your skin with scary chemicals (unless you count dye, but I've never gotten a chemical burn from dye...yet.)
I think that's all for today. Keep an eye out for some super girly-riffic pinks on the yarn page!

I am a spinning wheel...and yet I have no name.
This is my wheel...I spend lots of hours with this piece of equipment, so I feel like it is almost an extension of my body. I spin on an ashford joy, single treadle (because I like leg muscles).
The thing I love about this particular machine is that there are no plugs, no electricity, no radio waves and no noises except the crank and the flyer spinning away. Making yarn feels really "analogue" as my husband says...I love that they haven't come up with a better, more "digital" way to do it yet (aside from milling machines and even those are still really 19th century!)
Today on the wheel:
Alpaca from New Zealand...I can't wait to dye this...I'm thinking perhaps a few shades of pink...I rarely make pink yarn!
That's all for today, Check back for more yarn updates!
And we are still in need of designers for our "Fibertarian" knit magazine, so feel free to hop over there and submit something!
Thanks for stopping by!
